Hormone Health

Endocrine hormones are small molecules that are secreted into the blood stream by certain organs (called endocrine glands) to exert their effect in another organ.  After being secreted into the blood stream, hormones travel in the blood until they reach their target organ.  Once there, they bind the receptor and exert their intended function.

Hormone levels in your blood are carefully regulated by intricate feed back mechanisms that function much like a thermostat.  Hormonal imbalances occur when these mechanisms are disrupted or overwhelmed by external or internal causes.  These hormonal imbalances are categorized into over-production or under-production, each causing different disease processes or syndromes.

Symptoms arising from hormonal imbalances can be non-specific, mild and attributed to aging or other common conditions by both physicians and patients.  Thus, Endocrine diseases (such as cushings syndrome, acromegally, hypogonadism, etc...), depending on the degree of imbalance, can go undetected for years.
